HLB Adds Alipay+ to Payments Ecosystem, Giving Widest Choice of Cross-Border QR Payments in Malaysia
Hong Leong Bank Adds Alipay+ to Payments Ecosystem, Giving Customers the Widest Choice of Cross-Border QR Payments in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, 28 OCTOBER 2026 – Hong Leong Bank (“HLB” or the “Bank”) has expanded HLB QR Pay with Alipay+ through Payments Network Malaysia (“PayNet”), establishing the widest cross-border QR payment network of any Malaysian bank directly on the HLB Connect app.
The addition of Alipay+ enriches HLB’s existing ecosystem alongside UnionPay International (“UPI”) and Weixin Pay, which already spans more than 120 million QR merchants across China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Thailand. With Alipay+ bolstering coverage in China and Hong Kong, with countries such as South Korea, the Philippines, Laos, and more to be added progressively, HLB customers can enjoy seamless transactions across major regional markets. This unified coverage allows customers to pay abroad as easily as they do at home, bypassing the hassle of downloading local payment apps or managing multiple e-wallet top-ups.
Kevin Lam, HLB’s Group Managing Director and CEO, said, “Our roots go back over 120 years, when we began as one of Malaysia’s earliest remittance institutions, supporting customers to build families, conduct business, and pursue opportunities by facilitating cross-border payments and transfers. This requires a deep level of trust from the communities we serve, and we recognise our responsibility to continue earning that trust, especially with the rapid development in payment technology.”
“Adding Alipay+ alongside our existing QR payment network gives customers more ways to pay using the banking app they already know. We want paying overseas to feel as straightforward as paying at home, whether customers are enjoying a family holiday or travelling for business.”
HLB’s expanded QR connectivity forms part of the Bank’s broader payment ecosystem, which brings together debit and credit cards, support for Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, international remittances and multi-currency capabilities. Customers can choose the payment method that suits their needs, from everyday purchases and online shopping to overseas spending and sending money to family abroad.
