Kuala Lumpur, 20 May 2020
Hong Leong Bank and Hong Leong Islamic Bank (‘HLB’ or ‘the Bank’) have pledged a total of RM150,000 worth of meals for buka puasa and Raya celebration to 10 selected orphanages and senior care homes across the country through their ‘Jauh di Mata, Dekat di Hati’ campaign. This is in an effort to support underserved and in-need communities by ensuring they are well-provided for as they observe the holy month of Ramadan and Raya during these tough times.
One of the biggest challenges faced by orphanages and senior care homes this year is a reduction in social assistance and contributions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Conditional Movement Control Order (“CMCO”). These homes rely on the goodwill of the public and corporates as a means to sustain and feed their residents and as such, the Bank is stepping up to support these 10 homes to ensure that these communities are cared for and that they are not left behind.
Domenic Fuda, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HLB said, “In line with HLB’s commitment towards being socially responsible, we recognise and understand the importance of reaching out to underserved communities amid uncertainty following the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, our pledge to provide hot meals and financial aid to orphanages and homes for the elderly across the country aims to help alleviate some of their financial burdens over the next month.”
HLB has identified six (6) orphanages and four (4) senior care homes which houses a total of 475 children and elders across Selangor, Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Johor and Sarawak as beneficiaries of this campaign. Over the Ramadan and Raya festive period, the RM150,000 from HLB will be in the form of RM35,000 worth of vouchers for the homes to safely and conveniently order meals and treats for the children and elderly through e-delivery services such as foodpanda. The remainder RM115,000 will be in cash aid to ease the financial burdens of the homes, which can be used to buy food and hygiene essentials and necessities for Ramadan and Raya amid this pandemic.
“The month of Ramadan gives us the opportunity to not only reflect on our current situation but also to help uplift communities in-need. As Malaysians, what better way is there to support one another than by bringing smiles to the faces of these underserved segments through simple acts of kindness which will ultimately go a long way in building and strengthening our core values as a society that leaves no one behind. That is the true community spirit of Malaysia which we need to align ourselves to especially during these unprecedented times,” said Zalman Zainal, Chief Marketing and Communication Officer of HLB.
With the recent extension of the MCO, underserved and in-need communities are increasingly feeling the pinch from the lack of donations and support. The ‘Jauh di Mata, Dekat di Hati’ campaign paves the way for all Malaysians to be inspired to join hands in helping those in need, as a little goes a long way. As we move into an era of a ‘new normal’, HLB calls on the rakyat to bring some cheer into the lives of the underprivileged so we may celebrate the spirit of Ramadan and Raya while uplifting the nation through simple acts of kindness.
